Brompton launch mobile bike rental on Pedal 4

Brompton has been hiring out bikes for more than fifteen years. Until now, they have always done so from a fixed point, a network of more than 100 static rental hubs across the UK, in stores and in lockers, where the rider comes to the bike.

This summer, that changed. Brompton has launched mobile bike rental, on Pedal 4.

The idea is simple. Rather than people travelling to the bikes, the bikes travel to the people. A static rental hub only works where permanent infrastructure can be installed, which rules out a lot of the places demand actually sits, such as a station forecourt on a busy evening, a park during a festival, a sporting event that lasts a weekend and then disappears. A mobile rental hub goes to those places, sets up, rents bikes to customers and leaves again.

We worked with Brompton to customise Pedal 4 for the job. In our bespoke Brompton configuration it carries up to 11 Brompton bicycles, with a wider range of models planned. It’s launched in London but will be used by Brompton at events across the UK.

A cargo bike is the right tool here for the same reasons it's the right tool for moving all types of goods through cities. It moves through dense urban areas that a van struggles with. It can be deployed and retrieved in high-traffic areas without needing a bay, a permit or a driver with a licence. And it carries a meaningful load while doing it.

Brompton has been building bikes in Britain for fifty years, whilst Minimal is far younger, we’re excited to be two British engineering companies coming together to create a new product. As so much of British manufacturing has moved overseas, it means a lot to have built a product in Britain that will help people move around British cities more easily.

We're not developing a range of vehicles. We're building a new way to move everything, all around the world. A mobile bike rental hub wasn't on the list of applications we set out to build, but it’s the product of an innovative team that solves problems at lightning speed.
