Royal Mail boost urban deliveries with Pedal 4

Royal Mail are rolling out Pedal 4 across their UK network this month, with vehicles supporting fleets operating in London, Brighton, Cambridge and other major cities.

It's a step towards Royal Mail's target of 100% zero-emission final mile deliveries by 2035.

Royal Mail has been delivering the nation's post since 1516. Handing part of that job to a vehicle designed and built by Minimal’s team represents our most significant deployment to date, and is a huge signal that last-mile delivery needs new purpose-built vehicles.

Pedal 4 is designed, engineered and built at our microfactory in Park Royal, West London. At a moment when so much of the UK's vehicle manufacturing has moved overseas, Britain's national postal service is running on cargo bikes made in London. We're a British company building vehicles to help keep Britain's biggest courier moving.

Pedal 4 has proven a superior economical option for deliveries. It stands at 2.2x cheaper to run than electric vans, and 5.2x cheaper than diesel vans, using just 0.15 kWh per mile. As an electric pedal-assist vehicle, it's exempt from congestion charges and parking fees. And because it doesn't require a licensed driver, it opens up delivery employment to a far wider pool of people.

"Our new electric cargo cycles mark another important step towards reaching Net-Zero by 2040 and making our delivery network more efficient for the future.” said Mark Riley, Delivery Design Manager at Royal Mail. “They will help reduce emissions and improve air quality in the communities we serve, while creating new opportunities for people to join Royal Mail without needing a driving licence.”

Royal Mail operates one of the most demanding delivery networks in the country. Their decision to scale Pedal 4 throughout the UK is the clearest possible signal we've had that right-sized electric vehicles will be central to how goods move through cities.

Royal Mail could have supported their fleets with more vans. Instead, they have shown that new vehicles are needed to move goods in cities and that Minimal is the engineering company building them.
